All Masterclass capacities are capped and we welcome dancers from the age of 5. (Masterclass faculty may change, CYD? holds the right to offer a replacement tutor of comparable background & status.)

As part of your entry ticket, you will get the chance to watch the Dance Schools Competition at the end of the day and see who are the Junior & Senior winners through to our Grand Final taking place at the Super Convention in October! You will also get the chance to watch the top UK dance colleges perform on the CYD? main stage, as well as see some of the CYD? Dance Stars do solo performances too!

Prizes / awards / scholarships

Throughout the classes, special awards, prizes, potential scholarships and audition cards are distributed to add an extra layer of excitement and recognition. Dancers can be scouted for the CYD? Dancer of the Year final, held at the CYD? Super Convention, CYD x Joffrey Intensive part & fully funded scholarships, gold cards for college scholarship auditions as well as other awards!

Past Masterclass Faculty

Ricky Jinks

Ricky Jinks is a British choreographer, teacher and movement director who is currently based in London. Ricky is known for his thought-provoking and emotionally authentic creativity. The versatility of his skills is shown through the vast sectors of work that he is adaptable to working in including live theatre, artist performances, TV, music videos and contemporary dance. He stands out as a choreographer due to his versatility in styles and genres and therefore being able to create for a huge range of clients and their creative desires. As a dancer he has performed all over the world and on lots of platforms including Wembley Arena, The X Factor and The Voice for artists such as Kylie Minogue and Olly Murs. Ricky is known for his approach to all of his work. He is committed to his authenticity within the industry – always prioritising the comfortability of the client whilst also allowing the client/artist to create art that pushes boundaries. He believes the magic is in the process and the amount of love in the experience. Ricky has choreographed for music artists and companies such as Matthew Morrison, Adidas, Stella McCartney, Pixie Lott, DFA, UEFA Champions League and Tate Britain. He founded his own dance company in 2018 who have performed all over the country and he trains professional dancers weekly – he loves sharing with his community and creating opportunities for dancers to train and discover their artistry, focusing on their movement and their mindsets. He won the Group Choreographer of the Year award at the UK Dance Awards 2019 and was a finalist at the Ace Awards in New York. As well as choreographing, Ricky is a dance teacher who has taught all over the world including Australia, Dubai, Canada, Iceland and Italy. He likes to travel to these countries to experience new cultures and to connect with people through this beautiful craft all over the world. He is grateful every day to be able to do what he loves for a living and to share that love with many people.

Alyx Steele

Alyx has more than a decade of experience working within the Commercial industry firstly as a dancer having worked for a number of International artists and brands such as Rihanna, Pink, Jessie J, Coldplay, Nike, Converse, and Heineken as well as Television Shows X Factor, Brit Awards and Mobo Awards.

It’s Alyx’s love for Creativity that had lead her into a career in Choreography. She has a passion for popular culture and enjoys pulling inspiration from other creative aspects to challenge boundaries and bring the clients vision to life.

She has worked with Uk artist Tinie Tempah in creating his resident show in Ibiza as well as Uk festival SW4. Other artists include Vv Brown, Charlie XCX, David Guetta, French Montana and Disclosure. Most recently Alyx Choreographed the closing number for MTV European Music Awards.

In 2016 working with Director Romain Pissenem, Alyx Choreographed the opening ceremony for the FFA World Cup Qualifier at Stade De France in Paris.

Dominic Lawrence

After Contemporary training, Dominic took the principal role in Thriller Live playing Michael Jackson. He has since worked with a plethora of recording artists and companies that include Chris Brown, Cheryl Cole, JLS, Alexandra Burke, Adidas and the BBC.

His choreography has been described as “combining dynamic/musical Hip Hop with the weird but translatable elements of Contemporary dance, resulting in a fun yet intense workout of the body and mind.”

He firmly believes in using the bodies facilities instrumentally, to be the canvas you can picture. He has taught and taken class around the world including Poland, Lithuania, and Atlanta, sharing his passion for dance with other cultures and people.

Jordan Melchor

Training: Lesco College

Jordan started dancing at the young age of 13. He studied dance at Lesco College and trained in styles such as ballet, jazz, contemporary and commercial.

He then went on to tour with Avant Garde Dance Company which is a contemporary fusion company around the UK and abroad.

He has developed a unique and powerful style of his own which has led him to perform in various genres of the entertainment industry exploring areas such as Film, Commercials, TV, Live Performances & Tours.

He has performed with Artists such as Leona Lewis, FKAtwigs, Little Mix.

Jordan has also worked with several big brands including: House of Fraser, Gap, D& G, ASOS and Puma.

In 2016 Jordan was one of the four dancers for the Elie Goulding Delirium World Tour. He got to travel around the world and perform on stages like Madison Scare Garden.

Jordan has gained enormous experience in the dance world and has developed to be one of the top Male Dancers in the industry.

Philip Birchall

Training: Laine Theatre Arts

Scarborough born and London based, professional commercial dancer, Philip Birchall, has dedicated his life to the performing arts and has subsequently enjoyed success in TV, Theatre, Live shows and alongside No. 1 music artists worldwide.

Since his graduation from the renowned Laine Theatre Arts Philip he has continued to hone in on his professional skills, some of his credits include

Josh Baker

Josh got his first professional job in London’s West End when he was 12, playing the title role in ‘Billy Elliot The Musical’.

Since then he has worked in various fields of the industry, including dancing for the Queen behind Beverly Knight and Jess Glynn, as well as featuring in various music videos around the world. From the age of 14 he began assisting Got To Dance winner Lukas Mcfarlane across Europe and became a dancer in his contemporary company Untitled. He is currently choreographing a variety of shows/performances for the internationally renowned Bird College and most recently just finished in ‘The Lorax’ at The Old Vic, choreographed by Drew Mconie. He is also very excited to be featuring in two more West End shows this year – soon to be announced.

Demz Crawley

Demz Crawley is a professional dancer and choreographer from Scotland who has trained all over the world such as London, New York and LA where she trained with the best mentors in the industry.

Demi has trained in all styles but the styles she is known for are heels, commercial, jazz funk! Her influence on the UK and Scottish dance scene with her intensives and master classes have improved and given dancers amazing opportunities in the industry through her awards and funded training program giveaways through her events held in Scotland.

Joshua Base Pilmore

Joshua Base Pilmore is a commercial choreographer and teacher based in London.

His work spans across the entirety of the commercial dance industry, from having a weekly slot at Base Dance studios, to choreographing music videos for artists such as M.O, adverts for Sony and Made in Chelsea as well as appearing on Sky1’s Got To Dance where he worked closely with Pussycat Doll Kimberly Wyatt. He has also taught for; Move it, HDI, Studio 68, pineapple, Jelli Studios (Dance mums UK) and Runway House.

Sam Parry

Maximilian Jarish

Training: Bird College

Maximilian is a choreographer based in London, since graduating Bird college where he obtained a diploma in professional dance and musical theatre he has been working extensively in the dance industry.

After graduating Maximilian was lucky enough to tour with various contemporary/ hip hop companies round the U.K as well as internationally working as a dancer and also assistant choreographer. Max teaches all across Europe at renowned studios as well as leading workshops at dance colleges, universities and studios in the U.K.

Ainsley Ricketts

Training: Dance Connection & The Urdang Academy

Ainsley Ricketts starting dancing from a young age training at Dance Connection, at age 16 moved to London to further his training at The Urdang Academy.

Ainsley has worked in many fields of the industry from Dancing, Assisting and Choreography.

After finishing his training he went into performing in musicals such as Motown (Westend), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (Westend), Barnum, Bugsy Malone and The Wedding Singing (UK Tour).

Throughout his training he was mentored by The UK’s Leading choreographer Dean Lee and assisted him on the likes of X Factor UK and many other projects.

Ainsley has had the privilege of dancing for Janet Jackson, Hailee Steinfield, Rina Sawayama – Cherry (Music video) & on Strictly Come Dancing (ITV).

He also has a huge Passion for teaching. Ainsley has taught in various studios over the world and teaches regularly at Londons top studios.

Ainsley Ricketts is the Proud Creator and Owner of the Orenda Dance Programme which launched December 2018.

Jessie James

Training: Edge Performing Arts Center, Millennium Dance Complex, and Movement Lifestyle

Jessie James, originally from the USA, has worked across all genres of the dance community. From the Stage to the Big Screen. After her early success as a young dancer, it became clear she would pursue a career in dance. Her professional career started at 17 and since then, Jessie has worked with and/or performed works by Mandy Moore, Mia Michaels, Benoit Swan Pouffer, Barry Lather, Jerry Reeve, Andrew Winghart, Bonnie Story, Jaci Royal, Lukas Mcfarlane, and Ricky Jinks.

Her time in LA included professional training at Edge Performing Arts Center, Millennium Dance Complex, and Movement Lifestyle.
Her credits include X Factor UK Finale, The Greatest Dancer -Company Jinks, America’s Got Talent, The 38th Annual Daytime Emmy’s, High School Musical 3 Sr Year, High School Musical, American Mall, The Donny & Marie Residency in Las Vegas, The Donny & Marie Show on Broadway, The Donny & Marie Christmas USA/Canada Tour,Odyssey Dance Theatre, Odyssey Dance Theatre European Tour, and Justin Giles “Soul Escape”.

Jessie is also a freelance Teacher, Choreographer, and Creative. Jessie guides dancers both young and professional alike to find depth, meaning, and detail in their work. Jessie takes pride in her early training from Center Stage Performing Arts Studio in Jazz, Ballet, Hip Hop, Ballroom, Tap, and Contemporary, traveling worldwide sharing her knowledge. Choreographing since the age of 18, she has become a recognisable name among top studios across the USA receiving high honors. Jessie was recently interviewed and featured in Dance Teacher Magazine for her work as a traveling guest Choreographer and Teacher.

Tommy Wade-smith

Training: Performers College

Tommy is a professional dancer & actor who trained at Performers College. Since graduating he has performed all over the world and recently finished his second year in The Book of Mormon, London.

Tommy recently began creatively exploring the teaching and choreographic side of the industry, with recent work being performed at Move It 2019 and West End Bares 2018. He also began teaching an open jazz/musical theatre class at Base Studios in London just over a year ago.

He hopes to bring a variety of jazz training to the UK, with focus on technique and style, merging the ballet and jazz world together to create a strong foundation for dancers who can then add a layer of style on top, resulting in versatility and adaptability.

Alastair Postlethwaite

Chris Clark

Training: New York Broadway Dance Centre

Chris has danced on tv shows such as X factor working for well known creative directors including Brian Friedman & Squared Division.

He has also choreographed for various acts & finalists on Britain’s Got Talent & Got To Dance. Featured in “Street Dance 3D” the film. He was awarded a scholarship to “New York Broadway Dance Centre” from the Pulse On Tour UK. Currently teaching commercial workshops around the UK & has also taught around a lot of Europe.

Mark Webb

Commercial, Career: Destiny’s Child, Take That, Elton John, Kylie, Diana Ross, Cher

Mark is one of the most sought after dancers of his generation. He has had the pleasure of performing on stage with such top musical artists as Destiny’s Child, Take That, Blue, Elton John, Kylie Minogue, Steps, Girls Aloud, Lionel Ritchie, Spice Girls, Boyzone, Diana Ross and Cher.

His stamina and discipline of mind and body combined with his work ethic, meant that he toured extensively worldwide with these artists. He has also performed at all the major UK pop concerts such as The Brits and Party in the Park. He was a regular dancer on well-known TV programs as TOTP and CDUK. He can also be seen in various pop videos.

Mark has also choreographed for such notable brands as Veda, Harley Davidson, Clothes Show, Tiger, Ben Sherman, Red Mother, Adidas, Speedo, the V Festival, Salon International, The Motor Show, Next, Aspri, FA Cup Final – to name a few.

Mark is currently teaching at some of the leading performing arts colleges in the country and is passionate about passing on his knowledge and work ethic to the generation of today.

Billy Sawyer

Training: Performers College

Billy Sawyer is a London based industry professional, commercial dancer. Graduating from Performers College in 2014, Billy has since gone on to reach great heights in the dance world.

After a short run in London’s West End in ‘The Illusionists’, Billy set his sights on the commercial world and never looked back. Billy has worked with Harry Styles, Camila Cabello, Hugh Jackman, Kanye West, Zara Larsson, Emma Bunton, Charli XCX and Olly Murs to name just a handful. He has also been on tour with Steps, toured with Jess Glynne and most recently could be found in stadiums around the country dancing for Spice Girls on their Spice World Tour. Other credits include The BRIT Awards, The X Factor, Britain’s Got Talent, Dance Dance Dance and The Voice.

Billy is excited to be joining the CYD Faculty and is enthusiastic and passionate about giving back to the next generation. His mission is to equip them with the tools and inspiration and self belief to chase their own dreams in the dance world.

Layton was born in Bury, Manchester and he began his career at the age of 12 playing the title role of Billy in the West End production of Billy Elliot. He made his debut TV appearance as Kylie in the BBC comedy Beautiful People. He went on to train at Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts which was documented on CBBC’s School For Stars.

Theatre includes: Paul in Kiss Me Kate (Sheffield Crucible); Seaweed in Hairspray! (2018 UK Tour); Angel in Rent (London/UK Tour); The Car Man (Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures); Simon in The Lord of the Flies (Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures) and Young Michael in Thriller Live (West End).

TV/Film includes: Rocketman (Paramount); Larry in Benidorm (ITV) and Postcode (CBBC). Layton played series regular ‘Stephen’ in the BBC Comedy Bad Education series and feature film.

Josh Denyer

Training: Laine Theatre Arts

Joshua performed the lead role of “Billy” in Billy Elliot the Musical, Australia before moving to London to take up a full scholarship at Laine Theatre Arts where he graduated in 2016.

Josh has worked extensively in different areas of the industry in both Australia and the UK and performed in many shows including The Serpents Teeth by Sydney Theatre Company (Sydney Opera House), LOcREaDO Dance Company, (NIDA Parade Theatre) Peter Pan and Aladdin (Chelmsford Civic Theatre), Dance Captain – Aladdin (Hayes Beck Theatre), Neleus in Mary Poppins The Musical (Germany), Remembering The Movies (UK TOUR) and Associate Choreographer on Jack and the Beanstalk, (Hastings White Rock Theatre).

Josh has been the recipient of various awards such as the Australian Dance Awards for “Outstanding performance in a stage musical”, Green Room awards for “Male artist in a Leading Role in Musical Theatre – Billy Elliot the Musical”, Best Male Dancer Fast & Fresh. Josh has also achieved his SOLO SEAL Award accredited to him by the Royal Academy of Dance in 2016.

Alongside his performing career, Josh is a passionate and sought after teacher/choreographer. Having taught his own workshops across the UK and Europe. Josh has also held his own class at Pineapple Dance Studios and BASE Studios in London subject to his performing commitments.

Charlotte Gooch

Training: Laine Theatre Arts

Charlotte trained professionally at Laine Theatre Arts, graduating in 2007 she has been working non-stop in Musical Theatre in The West End and Internationally.

Theatre credits include; Alex Owens in Flashdance, Tina Sparkle in Strictly Ballroom, Dale Tremont in the Olivier award-winning Top Hat, Penny Johnson in Dirty Dancing, Margot in Legally Blonde, Bombalurina in CATS & Patty Simcox in Grease, to name but a few.

Other credits include; Strictly Come Dancing (BBC), Len Goodman’s For the Love of Fred Astaire (ITV) The Royal Variety Performance (ITV), All Star Musicals (ITV), Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway (ITV).

Graeme Pickering

Training: The Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts

Graeme began his training at LIPA – The Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts, Paul McCartney’s Fame School. He furthered his training in Musical Theatre at Liverpool Theatre School where he graduated with a Distinction.

Graeme began working for Celebrity Cruise Lines new production company as their London Casting Associate in 2015. Within his role, he has been lucky enough to work with the casting team not only in London, but within Europe, Australia and New York also. Other casting work includes collaborating with Variety Worldwide and Casting Director for the UK Tour of ‘Rip it Up: The 70s’.

Graeme works in various distinguished full-time dance and theatre schools across the UK, training aspiring students to succeed in show business. Most recently, Graeme has taught regularly at Elmhurst Ballet School, Studio 79 (Leicester), Jelli Studios (Liverpool), SLP College, Chantry School of Contemporary and Balletic Arts and Funky Studios. He has delivered workshops at LIPA, Laine Theatre Arts, The Urdang Academy, London Studio Centre, Stella Mann College of Performing Arts, Leicester College of Performing Arts, Tiffany Theatre College, Expressions Academy of Performing Arts, Centre Pointe Studios, Rare Studios, Creative Academy and Liverpool Theatre School to name a few! Internationally, he has visited Lucia Mathas Institute of Performing Arts (Amsterdam), IAB (Barcelona), APAN (Perth, Australia) and Brent Street (Sydney).

As well as choreographing for various agent showcases across the UK, other choreography credits include ‘Standing in Stardust’ (Bourne Leisure), Sleeping Beauty (Palace Theatre, Newark), Chicago (LIPA, Liverpool), Aladdin (Palace Theatre, Newark), Party A Paris (Tatton Park, Cheshire) ‘Oklahoma’ (SLP College, Garforth), ‘Beauty and the Beast’ (Palace Theatre, Newark), ‘Paris Party’ and ‘The Masked Ball’ (Tatton Park, Cheshire), ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ (Palace Theatre, Newark), ‘The Great Gatsby’ (Branston), ‘Beauty and the Beast’ (Grand Pavilion, Porthcawl), ‘The Wind in the Willows’ (Epstein Theatre, Liverpool), ‘Loserville’ and ‘The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee’ (Capstone Theatre, Liverpool).

During his time as a performer, Graeme was fortunate to travel the world on luxury cruise lines performing in first class production shows. He worked for Costa Cruises, Carnival Cruises, Celebrity Cruises and the prestigious, world famous company – Cunard Line. Graeme was also fortunate to be a part of the celebrations for the Olympics London 2012.

Graeme is the founder and creator of Nottingham Musical Theatre Associates – a monthly musical theatre programme for students aged 8-18 years, designed to enhance the excellent work of their regular lessons. Anthony Kaye

Anthony Kaye has been a commercial dancer for over ten years working closely with agencies AMCK, MASS MOVEMENT and DANCERS INC. In that time he has appeared on shows such as The X Factor, The Brit Awards, MTV Europe Music Awards and The Birmingham NEC Clothes Show Live. Some of his credits include Beyonce, Rhianna, Christina Aguilera, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey and Rita Ora.

Having taught at dance studios and colleges such as Pineapple Studios, Studio 68, Studio 25, Rare Studios, The Wilks Academy, Lipa and more he is incredibly thrilled and EXCITED to meet and see what the dancers will bring at this years CAN YOU DANCE? GRAND FINAL!

Nathan “NEO” Gordon

Nathan “NEO” Gordon is a highly respected choreographer & dancer in the UK & abroad.

With his precise, innovative and dynamic choreography, NEO has travelled worldwide to teach, choreograph & perform for over 2 decades. He currently resides at the Urdang Academy as the Engagement and Commercial Industry Manager. Choreography and Dance Credits include: Flawless, StreetDance 1&2, X Factor, BGT and Kylie Minogue.

Josh Wharmby

Training: Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts

Josh Wharmby is a dynamic new Liverpool born, London based commercial choreographer, whose innovative and fresh choreography sets the stage alight.

After studying different forms of dance from an early age, he graduated from the prestigious Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts under the direction of Sir Paul McCartney, and was immediately in demand as a professional dancer. He has worked steadily in the industry since, appearing in television programmes such as ‘X Factor’, Chatty Man, the National Television Awards, and the Brit Awards among many others, working with many international stars, including Taylor Swift, Alexandra Burke, Nicole Scherzinger,Kylie Minogue, Stooshie, LMFAO, One Direction, Take That and Rita Ora. As well as being very familiar with working within a tv studio, Josh has had much experience performing at theatres and bigger venues, including Wembley Stadium, London’s 02 arena and the MEN arena.

Josh has worked with numerous choreographers, including the world acclaimed American choreographer Brian Friedman & Beyonce‘s resident choreographer JaQuel Knight. In 2015, he was assistant choreographer on the international Disney movie ‘Tini’, working alongside creative director Jerry Reeve. His particular linear style of choreography worked very well on the big screen, so he was an important and welcome asset to the creative team.

His diverse knowledge of different performance canvases allows him to choreograph to as small or as large a scale as required, so when he was offered the job of assistant choreographer to Shaun Niles and creative director Aicha McKenzie for the Rugby World Cup closing ceremony in 2016, his inventive, powerfulchoreography and his knowledge of working big stages and venues enabled him to translate his ideas easily into a larger than life performance at Twickenham Stadium. Most recently he was assistant choreographer on ITV’s newest dance show ‘Dance Dance Dance’ and went on to become choreographer of Season 3 of ‘Dance Dance Dance’ Holland.

He has the unique ability of producing original, spellbinding choreography that reflects todays trends yet keeps the integrity of the style with phenomenal results.

His dedication to his craft and genuine love for what he does, along with his professional, hardworking and down to earth attitude make him a respected colleague and a favourite ‘go to’ guy to get the job done!

Christopher Tendai

Training: Urdang Academy

Christopher Tendai started his training at the prestigious Urdang Academy in 2011 studying Professional Dance and Musical Theatre (BaHons).

Christopher graduated in 2014 and since then has worked in both Musical Theatre and Commercial. (Hamilton, Matilda, West Side Story, In The Heights, Fleur East, Rita Ora, Strictly Come Dancing). Now, Christopher is an aspiring Theatre Choreographer, and Movement Director, who’s ready to deliver a unique and original approach for the new era of the Industry. Christophers most recent work was his award winning show: IDENTITY which showcased Off Westend at The Turbine Theatre in March 2020 and had a Digital Showcase Revival at Theatre Peckham in January 2021.

“If you work hard enough, anything in life is achievable. I started my training in dance when I was 18. I knew there were others that had been dancing since they were 3. I knew it was hard but all I said to myself is ‘I need to get to their level in 3 years’. I spent every day in a studio, going over exercises, stretching and choreography. That passion and determination has made me the person I am today. I am now in the Westend, a new theatre choreographer and have my own Company. My aim in this life is to give back as much knowledge as I can to the next generation”

Ryan-Lee Seager

Training: London Studio Centre

Ryan has just finished touring with The Wedding Singer, upcoming projects include The Royal Variety Show as Associate Choreographer and he will be choreographing the pantomime Aladdin for QDOS at Beck Theatre -Hayes.

Adam is a freelance teacher & choreographer associated with Urdang Academy & Stella Mann College. On top of Adams freelance work & delivering workshops across the UK, Adam has also been part of the “Can You Dance?” core faculty for 2 years teaching multiple genres at the CYD Intensives, Regional & Super Conventions.
